Podfic Big Bang 2012 - Cover Art Assignments
So this year has been something of a whirlwind of impressions and flown by ridiculously fast...and I still haven't finished the two major podfic projects from last year. D: Not good.

But cats and free time and health aside, I still love podfics, I still love fandom, and I love being creative, so I signed up to the podficbigbang again this year - but this time just on the art side of things! 5 podfic covers, 10 chapter illustrations and an mp3 to audiobook conversion later, I'm finally finished and ready for a holiday...

Anyhow, drum roll please! I've got cover art to show off and hard-working podficcers to pimp!

Merlin: The Hunt

Author: novemberlite
Podficcer: erica_schall
Big Bang post: here
Fic Summary: Arthur/Merlin, NC-17 for [Warnings/Spoilers]rough sex, rimming and knotting. “Those Pendragons, they’re a different sort. Beastly, but clever. It’s said they’re drawn to magic--to power--and that’s how they find their... mate.”
Artist Notes: I might just possibly be a complete sucker for Beltane Hunt fics, and there aren't anywhere near enough of them in the Merlin fandom, so when I saw this was on the Big Bang list of projects, I may possibly - just possibly! - have squeaked with excitement and stayed up 'til a ridiculous time in the morning so that I could overcome the handicap of being in the wrong timezone and claim it for my project before anyone else had the chance...What do you mean, that's a little obsessive?
Art credits go to:
* Merlin's Keep for their wonderful collection of promo photos and (hopefully returning soon) screencaps galleries;
* Merimask, whose gorgeous hand-crafted leather masks are totally drool-worthy;
* Rick W. Mueller for creating the Edison MF font;
* FontGrube AH for creating the Jorvik Informal font.

Please Save My Earth: Searching for Sanity

Author: miko_no_da
Podficcer: opalsong
Big Bang post: here
Fic Summary: Issei/Jinpachi, NC-17 for [Warnings/Spoilers]parental and societal homophobia, attempted rape and transphobia. In order to find happiness in this life, Issei must first come to terms with who and what he is. An exploration of sexuality and gender identity.
Artist Notes: I've never actually heard of this fandom before this challenge, and I'll freely admit that I'm sure I still have only a hazy overview of what's going on, but I knew I could help on the practical level of putting the audiobook together. Also, I liked the idea of challenging myself to ferret out the essential fandom facts and put together a good cover without any previous knowledge. Ironically, this ended up being easier than one of the other covers I did for a fandom I've been in for more than four years...
Art resource credits go to:
* ElfGrove and a rather ancient-looking geocities rescue archive for their screencaps;
* jordan443's Dynamic:Earth desktop theme post for the background image;
* AJ Paglia for creating the Amperzand font.

Sherlock Holmes ('09): Full In the Sight of Paradise

Author: viceindustrious
Podficcer: unsettledink
Big Bang post: here
Fic Summary: Blackwood/Coward, NC-17 for [Warnings/Spoilers]sex, prostitution and character death. Blackwood survives his last confrontation with Holmes. Coward escapes Parliament. It's time to pick up the pieces.
Artist Notes: This story is not my usual thing - in general, the darker the story, the more assiduously I avoid reading it - but there was something unsettlingly compelling about the writing and its almost tangible sense of impending doom, and I felt an interesting challenge in the question of whether I could convey all (or any!) of that in one cover graphic.
Art resource credits go to:
* Emma-Jane Caps, Hans Matheson Online and LOST Solved for their promo photos and screen caps (although I was never able to find where on the latter page the cap in question came from...);
* Mayang's Free Texture Library and Lost And Taken for their wonderful and fascinating collections of textures;
* deviant_man for his post about Pripyat in abandonedplaces;
* GemFonts for creating the AvQest font;
* Borys Liechti for creating the Excellentia in excelsis font.

Star Trek (Reboot): Descartes' Error

Author: StarTrekFanWriter
Podficcer: kinseyx
Big Bang post: here
Fic Summary: Spock/Uhura, T for non-graphic sexual situations. Spock is accused of misconduct, but how did he get into such an illogical predicament to begin with?
Artist Notes: I think this is probably the biggest single fanart project I've done under any circumstances - I mean, ten chapter graphics on top of the main cover graphic? Massive task! But a fun one, too :).
Art resource credits go to:
* Screen Musings for their screencaps;
* Mayang's Free Texture Library and Lost And Taken for their wonderful and fascinating collections of textures;
* Far too many randomly googled images to list without boring people!
* Pia Frauss for creating the Jane Austen font;
* Justin Callaghan for creating the Space Age font;
* Unfortunately, I haven't been able to trace back who created the Plakata EF and Star Trek Bold fonts, but I'm very grateful for them.

for the bonus round of the Big Bang,

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.: The Better Gadget Affair

Author: ladyra
Podficcer: kalakirya
Big Bang post: here
Fic Summary: Napoleon/Illya, NC-17 for [Warnings/Spoilers]sex and non-graphic torture. Where did Napoleon get all those great gadgets from?
Artist Notes: I was so excited to see a Man from UNCLE story come up in the Big Bang, and one by Lady Ra to boot!
Art resource credits go to:
* The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Image Library for their wonderful collection of screencaps (which are amazingly easy to search);
* Gemnation, James-Henry.com and Cox the Saddler for having the exact "gadgets" I was imagining :D
* CC Font ManipSystems for creating the Rockwell Bold font.

and as a last-minute pinch-hit,

Merlin/Supernatural: Two Boys From Kansas in King Uther's Court

Podfic Big Bang Cover: Two Boys From Kansas in King Uther's Court

Author: ariadnes_string
Podficcer: electricmonk333
Big Bang post: here
Fic Summary: Gen, PG-13 for language and [Warnings/Spoilers]non-graphic violence/minor character death. The title kind of says it all. And this:
“Fair sir,” said the knight, or Jedi warrior, or whatever the fuck he was, “will ye just?”

“Will I which?”

“Will you try passage of arms for land or lady or for—“

“Seriously? Seriously? What, did someone drop acid in the fake mead at the Renaissance Fair? Stop dicking around, man, and fuck off.”

Artist Notes:
Art resource credits go to:
* Merlin's Keep and Supernatural Fans Online for their massive collections of screencaps and promotional photos;
* Richard Beatty Designs for creating the ReneLouis font;
* The Scriptorium for creating the Valdemar font.

Thank you! :D

I am still so excited about this cover! I love the composition of the cover. The way the picture captures Merlin running is great. That works really well for the story.

I am in awe that you managed to get Merlin his mask (it’s colouring and that it mirrors the colour of the lettering on top of it). Brilliant job!

Thank you for creating it – I’m sure it will go a long way in promoting my podfic :)

:D Thank you for picking out such a wonderful fic to record. I'm just off to download it, right now! Hopefully lots more people will like it too - are you crossposting to merlinpodfic and merlinxarthur?

I'm still so glad you like the cover. And embarrassingly fond of it myself - it was definitely worth all the hard work and the false starts!

On a somewhat graphics-geeky note, the original mask by Merimask was actually blue, but it was easier to manip in shape and texture to fit Merlin's facial alignment than some of her other masks. In comparison to the shape and angle tweaking, shifting the colour-balance to gold was a (somewhat) easier job. Though I have to admit that back when I was trying to do both Merlin and Arthur with masks, I kept on forgetting which was meant to be red and which was gold (and then I realised that y'know, Pendragon red, and gold to match Merlin's eyes, and felt a bit of an idiot for having to keep on looking it up! XD).

Heh, I cross-posted to merlinpodfic, amplificathon and podfic_bingo... I think it's kind of hard to miss now ;)

I cannot even begin to imagine how much work you must have put in the cover over all and the mask in particular - totally worth it though.

Excellent art, and wow, so many! Thanks for the sharing!

Sorry for the late reply, but thank you so much for the compliment - I'm glad you like it all :D . I had a lot of fun this year doing cover art for the podficbigbang, and now that it's all done and I have time for a break, I really must make the time to go and download all the lovely podfics that I've been looking forward to!

I am very late replying, but yay! Art :) I particularly love the MUNCLE one - it's so bright and very 60s.
helva2260: Arthelva2260 on July 22nd, 2012 03:27 pm (UTC)
I am even later replying, but thank you! (I read your comment in my email on holiday, and then completely forgot about it when I got home - sorry!)

The MUNCLE one is one of my favourites, for exactly that reason - it was very much inspired by the book covers :D
